Post-Doctoral Fellowships and Pre-Doctoral Externships

PIW Psychology Department

The Psychiatric Institute of Washington is a private, 130-bed inpatient facility with programs for adolescents and adults, as well as a partial hospitalization program for adults.

Excellence in behavioral health programs has been the mission of The Psychiatric Institute of Washington since it opened nearly 50 years ago. PIW is the first and only free standing psychiatric care facility in Washington, DC.

The Psychiatric Institute of Washington Psychology Department offers Post-Doctoral Fellowships and Externship training. Our Post-Doctoral Fellowship Program is a twelve-month, full-time training experience beginning on or about August 1st of each year and ending on or about August 1st of the following year. Likewise, our psychology externships are also a 12 month, part-time training experience for PhD and PsyD students in Clinical and Counseling Psychology programs. Our programs are designed to help psychologists-in -training gain experience and clinical knowledge for their future careers in mental health practices.

Our department offers two different options for externship placement. The two tracks offered are our therapy externship track and our assessment externship track, which are outlined below. Our externship program is a twelve-month, part-time experience beginning in mid-June and ending in mid to late June of the following year. An extern typically accrues between 700 and 780 hours through the PIW externship program in professional psychology. The externship offers a variety of training experiences including individual therapy, group therapy, psychological assessment, clinical supervision, and seminars.

PIW Clinical Psychology Assessment Externships

The Psychology Department offers an intensive assessment externship focusing on psychological assessment and group therapy with adolescents and adults in a locked inpatient setting. Students have the opportunity to complete psychological assessments with a diverse inpatient population of children, adolescents and adults. The assessments are requested by the DC Superior Courts or by PIW psychiatrists. Students receive individual assessment supervision as well as group supervision of group therapy. Students also participate in a weekly assessment and a weekly therapy seminar. In addition, students have the opportunity to participate in treatment planning and/or family meetings with their patient and multidisciplinary treatment team members.

The externship is restricted to doctoral candidates in the field of Psychology. Students are required to work 16 to 20 hours per week. The externship extends from June to June of the following year.

PIW Clinical Psychology Therapy Externship

The Psychology Department offers an intensive therapy externship focusing on individual and group therapy in a locked inpatient setting. Students have the opportunity to provide short-term therapy with a diverse inpatient population of children, adolescents and adults. Students receive individual supervision of individual therapy as well as group supervision of group therapy. Students also participate in a weekly didactic seminar. In addition, students have the opportunity to participate in treatment planning and/or family meetings with their patient and multidisciplinary treatment team members.

The externship is restricted to doctoral candidates in the field of Psychology. Students are required to work 16 to 20 hours per week. The externship extends from June to June of the following year.

Post-Doctoral Fellowships in Clinical Psychology

The Psychiatric Institute of Washington (PIW) offers two positions in a one year, full time, 2080 hour Postdoctoral Fellowship in Clinical Psychology. The position begins in early August and ends in early August of the following year.

The Postdoctoral Fellowship is an intensive training program in the treatment and evaluation of a short-term inpatient population, as well as training in our short—term Intensive Outpatient Program. We also have a heavy emphasis on training to become a competent clinical supervisor. Postdoctoral fellows will receive training and supervision in:

  • Performing inpatient group therapy
  • Providing inpatient individual therapy
  • Providing supervision to psychology externs
  • Providing consultation and in-service training
  • Developing individualized behavior plans
  • Conducting psychological assessments

Postdoctoral fellows will receive supervision by licensed psychologists, as well 3 didactic seminars per week. Candidates interested in the postdoctoral program must have completed a PsyD or PhD graduate program in Clinical or Counseling Psychology and completed a Doctoral Psychology Internship.

The full-time Postdoctoral Fellowship offers a salary of $40,000 plus health, dental and other benefits, including paid time off.
