Adult Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

When life feels overwhelming, it helps to have care that fits into the rhythm of your day. The intensive outpatient program (IOP) at the Psychiatric Institute of Washington (PIW) provides structured support for people who need more than weekly therapy.

IOP Outpatient Program at PIW: Why Choose Us?

When mental health challenges are holding you back, it helps to have structured care that fits into your busy schedule. Our intensive outpatient program meets you where you are and helps you reclaim peace of mind.

Highlights of our program include:

  • Supportive setting: Our IOP outpatient program takes place at a hospital. You receive services in a space dedicated to IOP and go home the same day. We provide a welcoming environment that makes it easier to focus on getting better.
  • Flexibility: Our IOP runs three hours a day, three days a week (with an option for four). You choose the days that work best for you. This schedule also gives you space to absorb what you’re learning and practice it at your own pace.
  • Trauma-based approach: We are one of the few programs in the District using a trauma-based approach. Friendly staff help you uncover how past experiences may shape your thoughts and relationships. You also learn how to recognize patterns that aren’t working for you. We then help you take steps toward lasting change.
  • Support for active-duty military: We are a TRICARE® in-network mental health care provider. Staff understand military culture and know what’s required to help you get back to duty. We regularly update Command when appropriate and follow the necessary steps for a smooth return.

Is the IOP program at the Psychiatric Institute of Washington right for me?

We help people 18 and older facing a variety of mental health challenges, including:

  • Adjustment disorders, difficulty adjusting to major life changes

  • Depression
  • Mood disorders, shifts in mood or energy levels
  • Panic disorder
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

Intensive outpatient program: What to expect

Our program runs Monday through Friday for three hours a day from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. IOP outpatient programs typically run three days a week. At PIW, you can attend four days a week, for additional support.

Here’s what to expect:

  • Ongoing assessments: A psychiatrist oversees your care and meets with you regularly. A nurse practitioner also monitors your treatment progress. These providers, along with mental health professionals, regularly communicate with each other and with you.
  • Therapy: Group, individual and education sessions help you develop coping strategies. You also find ways to manage your emotions and build problem-solving skills.
  • Medication management: Medications like antidepressants may help ease mental health symptoms. Staff meet with you regularly and make adjustments as needed.
  • Expressive arts: Creative activities help you process emotions and explore past experiences. You can express thoughts and feelings that may be hard to put into words.
  • Discharge planning: Before you complete IOP, we help you plan for the next steps of care. These efforts typically involve sharing information with the community-based providers you’ve already been working with.
